RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES IN NON COMMUNICABLE DISEASES (NCD) OPEN LAB FOR AFRICA

GlaxoSmithKline, a global research based Pharmaceutical company has launched the first call for proposals for the new Africa NCD Open Lab in support of the much-needed scientific research into Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) in Africa. Up to £4m of funding will be available in the first round, to support successful proposals from researchers in Nigeria, Cote d’Ivoire, Cameroon, Ghana, The Gambia, Kenya, Uganda and Malawi

An independent external advisory group, comprising clinical and scientific experts in the field of NCDs will review the applications, with recommendations for funding based on scientific merit. This group will consist of a majority African membership to ensure that only locally relevant research is funded.

ABOUT THE AFRICA NCD OPEN LAB

The Africa NCD Open Lab was established in March this year as part of our Africa Strategy, with a commitment to provide £25m funding over the next five years as part of a series of strategic investments in sub-Saharan Africa.

With Non-Communicable Diseases, such as cancer and diabetes becoming more prevalent across Africa and developing countries there is need to understand how and why these diseases manifest differently in this setting. The NCD Open Lab, based in our Stevenage R&D unit, aims to address these through the creation of an innovative epidemiological, genetic and interventional research. The aim is that priority diseases (Cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, chronic Kidney diseases and chronic respiratory diseases) and create a new generation of African NCD experts.

The launch of our first call for proposals is an important milestone for this initiative and we encourage researchers working in the field of NCDs who are based in the eight eligible countries applying for the fund and expert support available to them through this platform.
