Project Management is gaining ground as a highly sought-for skill in today’s job market.
In addition to on-the-job experience, more organizations are requiring project management certification. The two most popular are PMP and PRINCE2®.
As a holder of both the PMP and PRINCE2® Practitioner certification, I have had the opportunity to review both certifications for their pros and cons.
Speaking for the Nigerian environment, I have a few observations.
PRINCE2® vs PMP
Personally, I believe that you can’t go wrong having both. Read on and it’s your choice whether to do one first then the other or just choose one.
Entry requirements
PMP has more stringent barriers to entry than PRINCE2®.
You require 35 hours of formal training and 7500 hours of project management experience if you don’t hold a university degree and 4500 hours if you do. And this is just to qualify to sit for the exam!
On the other hand, you only require to study to sit for the PRINCE2® Foundation exam.
Acceptability
It used to be that the PRINCE2® certification was regarded as applicable only in Europe but these days, it is gaining more ground worldwide with AXELOS train-the-trainer sessions going on in the US and Canada in recent months.
The new wave of recognition is due to the fact that PRINCE2® has more structure to its tools and techniques. It practically has sample templates to assist you on the job.
PMP has more of guidelines but it is more well rounded. It deals with a variety of areas of application within the organization. It explains what to do. While PRINCE2® explains how to do it.

Where to train and sit for the exams
Both PMI and AXELOS have accredited training organizations or RESPs.
However, it is more difficult to find an exam institute in Nigeria for PMP. The PMI website directs you to an exam centre in Ghana.
OutofDbox Project Consult is an Accredited Exam Centre for EXIN offering PRINCE2® And ITIL® certification exams.
