A CHILD LEARNS

If a child lives with criticism,
he learns to condemn.
If a child lives with hostility,
he learns to fight.
If a child lives with ridicule,
he learns to be shy.
If a child lives with shame,
he learns to feel guilty.
If a child lives with tolerance,
he learns to be patient.
If a child lives with encouragement,
he learns confidence.
If a child lives with praise,
he learns to appreciate.
If a child lives with fairness,
he learns justice.
If a child lives with security,
he learns to have faith.
If a child lives with approval,
he learns to like himself.

Virtually all parents are child bearers but not all child bearers qualify as parents. Children are the most precious gift on earth and at the same time the most vulnerable demographic amongst humans.

What makes them vulnerable?
1. They cannot fend for themselves and rely on their parents/guardians for the survival.
2. They take on the habits of the individuals around them; they are very impressionsble.

The greatest responsibility of God to humankind is “Be fruitful and multiply”. Here is what Jesus said to his disciples about little children, “Take heed that you do not despise one of these little children, for I say to you that in heaven their angels always see the face of my father who is in heaven”. He also sounded a note of warning, “Whoever receives a little child in my name receives me, but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin it would be better for him if a million millstones were hung around his neck”.

Contrary to typical African tradition, many adults, parents of the present time are mostly concerned about their children only. This is a departure from the scriptures and our common heritage. Many of the social vices that bedevil the society will be non-existent if every adult ensures that every child is cared for physically, morally, mentally and spiritually.

I urge every adult to see all children as God sees them – precious, priceless gifts. They need love, good education and quality time. Make time to be with your children. They are the seeds that determine the future of our society. If properly nurtured, we will boast a better society.
