This article is an excerpt from Niyi Akinnaso publication in The Punch Newspaper of Dec 30, 2014 with the headline “A choice between life and death”.

He wrote about the need for citizens to vote for the best candidate in the forthcoming presidential election in Nigeria. He also wrote about choosing good health in the coming year – find the excerpt below.

I invite you to make a choice between good and bad health. Here, I have a recommendation: Choose good health. To be sure, nobody goes all out to choose bad health.

However, many impose bad health on themselves by making bad choices of food and lifestyle. Some invite killer diseases, such as diabetes and heart disease, by their eating habits – plenty of eba, pounded yam, rice, white bread, and sugary drinks, particularly fruit juices and sodas (Coke, Pepsi, Sprite, Seven Up, and so on). As the saying goes, some people dig their own graves with their teeth.

No one is saying that you should avoid these high carbohydrate foods and drinks altogether. Rather, you should take much less of them and supplement them with proteins (beans, meat, poultry, fish) and plenty of vegetables, fresh fruits and nuts. You should also find time to burn off excess calories by engaging in some form of physical exercise.

There are yet other who cut their lives by not taking prompt action on their ailments. They ignore symptoms or engage in self-medication by purchasing over-the-counter drugs from nearby chemist shops. Delay is a dangerous game to play with your health. Go to the doctor at the slightest symptom. Remember that many cancers are treatable these days but only if detected early.

Don’t join the group that takes medicine at random or only when remembered. The truth about any medicine is that it works best when you take it at regular intervals and at the same time of day.

The reason is that medicines work best when you keep the same level in your bloodstream. Finally, please don’t every stop taking your drug until you have exhausted your doctors prescription.
